The Cigar Vault was built on a single conviction: South Africans deserve access to the world's finest cigars — genuine, uncompromised, and sourced with the same rigour as the finest wine cellars of the Cape.
We source directly from master blenders in Cuba, Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Zimbabwe, and many more. Every cigar we carry is real, premium, and authenticated. Real vs Fake — How to Know What You're Holding
The counterfeit cigar trade is a serious and growing problem in South Africa. Sophisticated fakes — using real-looking boxes, convincing bands, and near-identical packaging — are sold every day. The techniques below are what we use on every cigar that enters The Cigar Vault, and what you should use before trusting any source other than us.
Visual Inspection — What to Look For
- The Wrapper — A genuine premium wrapper is smooth, oily, and consistent in colour. Fakes show patchy discolouration, prominent veins, rough texture, or a dry, matte surface.
- The Band — Authentic bands feature crisp, high-resolution printing with fine detail, embossing, and metallic foil. Blurry text, uneven edges, or misaligned logos are immediate red flags.
- The Box — Genuine cigar boxes are crafted from Spanish cedar with perfectly mitered corners and a distinct cedar aroma. Counterfeits often use cheaper wood, rough joins, or carry a chemical smell.
- Construction — Roll the cigar gently between your fingers. It should feel firm and consistent throughout — no soft spots, hard lumps, or loose ends.
The Blue Light (UV) Authentication Method
The most reliable and least known authentication method for premium cigars — particularly Cuban Habanos — is the ultraviolet blue light test.
Genuine Habanos and many other premium brands carry government-issued warranty seals embedded with UV-reactive security features. When held under a blue or UV light, these seals reveal hidden elements invisible to the naked eye:
- Hidden serial numbers visible only under UV light
- UV-reactive patterns embedded in the hologram
- Microtext that appears only under UV illumination
- Colour-shift fluorescence in the official warranty seal
We use a blue UV light on every Cuban cigar we inspect. Under the light, the genuine Habanos S.A. warranty seal reveals crisp, clearly defined serial numbers in UV-reactive ink. These numbers are unique, traceable, and impossible to replicate with standard printing equipment.
Counterfeit cigars will not pass this test. The serial numbers either do not appear, appear blurred and undefined, or the seal shows no UV response at all. If a cigar fails the blue light test, it is not authentic — regardless of how convincing the packaging looks under normal light.
More Ways to Verify
- QR Code Scan — Genuine codes return a verified manufacturer page. Counterfeit codes lead nowhere or redirect to generic sites.
- Hologram Inspection — Tilt the seal under normal light. A genuine hologram shifts colour and depth as the angle changes. A fake is a flat, printed sticker with no depth or movement.
- Cedar Smell Test — Open the box and smell it. Spanish cedar has a clean, resinous aroma. A chemical or odourless box is not genuine.
- Nails Test — Run a thumbnail gently along the wrapper. A genuine wrapper leaves a faint, even mark. A paper or reconstituted tobacco fake tears or responds inconsistently.
